Thanks for choosing Digital Care ReadyBoost Disc, featuring Microsoft ReadyBoost technology. Before you start, please save all your documents and exit all running applications. Follow the steps below to install your Digital Care ReadyBoost Disc and optimize your PC.

Step 1. Insert the Digital Care ReadyBoost Disc to a USB slot of your choice.

Step 2. If AutoPlay/AutoRun is enabled, you can click the Speed up my system using Windows ReadyBoost option.

Alternatively, you can open Windows | File Explorer (or use keyboard shortcut: Windows Key + E), right-click the newly discovered removable drive and select Properties from the menu. Select the ReadyBoost tab from the Properties dialog box that appears.

If Windows states that “This device cannot be used for ReadyBoost – The device does not have the required performance characteristics for use in speeding up your system“, follow the instructions of Reformatting Your Digital Care ReadyBoost Disc below. And then come back to this step.

If Windows states that “ReadyBoost is not enabled because this computer is fast enough that ReadyBoost is unlikely to provide additional benefit“, this probably means that Windows is installed on an SSD and no performance gain is possible. Please contact our support team (support@paretologic.com) for further options of how to speed up your PC.

Step 3. If ReadyBoost options appear, you can use the device for speeding up Windows Vista, 7, 8/8.1 or 10.

In Windows Vista, enable the Use this device option and move the Space to reserve for system speed slider all the way to the right.

In Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10, select the Dedicate this device to ReadyBoost option.

Click OK and your Digital Care ReadyBoost Disc device is ready!

Reformatting Your Digital Care ReadyBoost Disc

Occasionally, your Digital Care ReadyBoost Disc requires initial reformatting prior being used. Follow the steps below to format your drive.

Step 1. Open Windows | File Explorer (or use keyboard shortcut: Windows Key + E), right-click the newly discovered removable drive and select Format.

Step 2. In File system dropdown menu, choose NTFS. In Allocation unit size, choose Default allocation size. And check Quick Format under Format options. Click Start.

Do you have a Recovery Disc for your Windows computer? If you don’t, do you know how to get one? Most people have no idea how to set up a Recovery Disc, which could cause them big headaches if their PC ever develops a problem.

If you have a flaky computer, a Recovery Disc can help by repairing Windows to make things run smoothly again. If you ever encounter a corrupted system file, a Recovery Disc will help you find it and fix it as well. If Windows crashes and you can’t get it to restart, you can also use a Recovery Disc to restore your computer’s operating system.

The best thing is by using a Recovery Disc you’ll be able to save all the data on your computer. This includes Word documents and spreadsheets, your photo collection and your valuable photos and movies.

In short, the Recovery Disc is a lifesaver that provides peace of mind. But, surprisingly, few people have access to one.

Recovery Discs Are Hard to Find

In the past, when you purchased a Windows PC, you likely received a “recovery disc”– an actual compact disc – that you would use to troubleshoot problems and restore Windows on your computer. Over the years these recovery discs can be easy to misplace. If you ever need one in an emergency, they are nowhere to be found.

Microsoft and most PC manufacturers stopped shipping Windows installation disc a few years ago – which is probably better for the environment.

Windows 10 doesn’t come with a Recovery Disc by default – this can be a real problem if you run into trouble with your computer.

Produce a Recovery Disc On Your Own

However there is a step-by-step process you can follow to download and create a Windows Recovery Disc for both Windows 8 and Windows 10, but if you want to protect your Windows 7 computer, you’re basically out of luck. Windows 7 has basically been “retired” by Microsoft, so a Recovery Disc with the full reinstall option is very hard to find online.

But no matter what, the process of producing a Recovery Disc takes some dedicated effort, and can be a real hassle. That’s because, to do it right, you need:

A blank USB key that’s at least 4GB in capacity

An actual working PC to produce a recovery disc (but what do you do if your PC won’t start?)

On top of that, the actual process of downloading and setting up a full Recovery Disc with the option of reinstalling the Windows OS could take as long as a few hours!

Imagine when you actually need a Recovery Disc, this could be a massive pain… but we have a simple solution.

Choose Your Windows Recovery Disc

Our CompuCleverGEAR store offers Windows Recovery Disc for Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7 for both 32- and 64-bit versions. Please select the right version for your PC.

Having a Windows Recovery Disc ready by your PC provides you a peace of mind with an emergency plan for both your PC and your important files and data.

Always be prepared and don’t be caught in the rain without an umbrella.

ReadyBoost is an easy way to take an older system lacking in available RAM memory and suffering poor performance, and enhancing it. You don’t have to open up your PC and upgrade it. It really is fast and easy to see real improvements.

The post Speed up Your PC with ReadyBoost appeared first on CompuClever.

All PC users have likely experienced the frustration related to slow performance. There’s something just not right about having to wait for your PC to switch from one application to another. We want to multi-task and we want a PC system that does not suffer any delays. And, we ask, why not? It’s an extension of what we are capable of. So what are the choices in dealing with slow performing systems? We can keep our original PC just as it is with very few applications (not taking full advantage of its capabilities and not much fun). We can live with frustration and wait for the PC to respond when it is slow. We can look at the costs associated with adding more RAM or increasing other hardware. Instead of these options, we suggest a fast, easy, free alternative offered by Microsoft called ReadyBoost.

In our previous article we provided information about USB technology including USB flash drives. With that information in hand you are ready to speed up your PC with ReadyBoost. Let’s start with an overview of the technology.

Who Will Benefit?

Using this technology is best for users with 8 GB of RAM or lower, using a traditional spinning platter hard drive (HDD), and an operating system of Windows Vista or higher.

How to determine how much RAM you have:
Do one of the following:

Open up your Computer window (Windows / File Explorer), locate: Computer (or “This PC”), right-click and select Properties.

Open up the Control Panel and select: System and Security and in the “System” section select View amount of RAM and processor speed.

In the window that appears you can now view the specific operating system, the amount of physical memory (RAM), and other system information.

ReadyBoost will have little performance improvement or will be irrelevant if:

You already have a lot of RAM (> 16 GB) on your system

You are using a SSD drive.

The Technology:

From the many articles we have passed on to you in the past, you likely have a good idea that CompuClever programs such as PC TuneUp Maestro and PC Clean Maestro can regain performance that has been lost due to: defragmentation; clutter of junk files and unwanted applications (leading to the reduction of available space). These tools can also assist you when faced with a bogged down Internet connectivity as well as using functions related to improving browser speed and startup speed.

Now we can shine some light on a technology that can take your PC as it is, and can extend its performance abilities. Keep in mind we still recommend that you enhance your performance through regular clean up and maintenance.

The basics of the technology involve being able to cache data to a device. In this case, the device is a USB flash drive. You can also use CompactFlash and SD cards. How it works is that data is temporarily stored on the flash drive so that it can be retrieved faster than using the internal hard drive and available memory (RAM or “Random Access Memory”). Flash memory, such as a USB drive or SSD (Solid State Drive), benefit from faster seek times than standard magnetic hard disk drives. The only limitation is that USB flash drives will wear out in time. By some estimates[1] this won’t be for approximately 10 years.

Here’s How To:

You can begin by using a USB flash card that has at least 1 gigabyte (GB) of available space. For best results, use a flash drive or flash memory card with at least double the amount of available space as the amount of memory (RAM) in your computer.[2]

Flash memory card specifications:

You can use a maximum of 32 GB of available space on any single removable storage device.

The USB flash drive must support USB 2.0 or higher and your computer must have at least one free USB 2.0 port to plug in the drive. Note: ReadyBoost works best if you plug the flash drive into a USB port directly rather than an external USB hub shared with other USB devices.

Most memory cards work with ReadyBoost. Different kinds of flash memory cards include CompactFlash and Secure Digital (SD). Note: Some SD memory cards don’t work well with ReadyBoost due to issues with the SD card interface. ReadyBoost displays a warning message in these cases.

To enable or disable ReadyBoost:

Plug a USB flash drive or flash memory card into an available port.

The Autoplay dialog box appears. Under the General options, you can click Speed up my system.

The Properties dialog box opens. Note: You can also access this dialog any time by opening the Computer window (Windows / File Explorer), right-clicking the drive, and selecting Properties.Next, click the tab: ReadyBoost. You can then do one of the following (as seen in the image here):

To turn ReadyBoost off, click: Do not use this device.

To use the maximum available space, click: Dedicate this device to ReadyBoost. Windows will leave any files already stored on the device, but it’ll use the rest of the space to enhance system performance.

To use less than the maximum available space on the device, click Use this device, and then move the slider to choose the amount of available space on the device you want to use.

Windows displays the recommended space to use for optimal performance. If there isn’t enough space for ReadyBoost, a message is displayed telling you to free some space on the device.

The Benefits:

Our CompuClever team members have used ReadyBoost on a few systems that were so slow we faced having to replace them. We noted significant gains in performance of these computers. For systems that have only 2 or 4 GBs of RAM, the performance gains are significant.

We researched test results for ReadyBoost and found a very good site. Here is a list of improvements as well as situations where there are no performance gains.

When enabling ReadyBoost on a system with low amounts of RAM, you can experience:

Opening media files like photos, music or video is slightly faster (approximately by 2%).

The loading of web pages and the use of Office applications is slightly faster (approximately by 2%).

Your system’s boot timings are improved (up to 7%).

Your most used applications start faster (by 10 to 15%).

This same site states:

You will not notice any difference with ReadyBoost enabled when you play games or you run applications that are CPU or GPU intensive. Also the improvements get smaller when you add more RAM. On a system with more than 4GB of RAM you will not notice anything getting better. Also, adding an SSD drive to your computer means that there is no point in using ReadyBoost. We’ve done some very quick tests after adding an SSD and we quickly noticed that ReadyBoost becomes irrelevant.

Ejecting Flash Drives:

It is good practice to eject flash drives that are in use. This means closing windows and applications using the device and then using the Safely Remove Hardware icon. In doing so, you eliminate the risk of losing data or experiencing data corruption – especially when files are being transferred.

To properly eject a drive:
Use the Safely Remove Hardware icon and eject your device before pulling it out of the USB port.
You can also locate the drive in the Computer window (Windows / File Explorer) right-click it, and select Eject. Windows will tell you when it’s safe to remove the device thereby eliminating any chances of data corruption.

The exception:

In our research we found that:

Microsoft does not require ReadyBoost devices to be ejected before being removed. The ReadyBoost files are simply a cache for the real files being written to disk and removing the drive without ejecting does not harm the system.[3]

In fact, you can leave your ReadyBoost enabled drive inserted in the port and shutdown your system. In this way, when you start up your PC you can also enhance startup time performance.

Summary:

There are few disadvantages to this free technology. You need to dedicate a USB port for your drive (using a USB hub is possible but not preferred). Also, your flash drive will eventually need to be replaced… but before that happens you’ll likely have purchased a new system entirely. Cost is not really a factor though. Flash memory drives are fairly inexpensive and certainly not as much as installing new hardware or buying a new system altogether.

Given all this, we strongly feel that ReadyBoost can extend the life of older PCs that are lacking the necessary RAM and are not able to keep up in a fast computing world. We hope you enjoy the benefits as we have.

Can you guess what version of Windows is the most popular among all PC users? Is it Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7, or even Windows XP?

Answer: Windows 7. According to NetMarketShare.com, Windows 7 dominates over 45% of the entire desktop market.

Do you know how to identify the version and edition of your Windows Operating System (OS)? Sometimes, it is critical that you have all the necessary version and edition information, including the type of system, whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. For instance, when you need to refresh, repair, or even reinstall your Windows OS, you must have all this data ready. This article instructs you how obtain it.

The System Properties Dialog Box

It turns out that you can find the complete set of Windows version and edition information from the System Properties dialog box. It provides an overview of your PC’s hardware and OS information including Windows OS version, edition, and system type.

For instance, the System Properties dialog box shown above provides us with the following information:

Windows OS version: Windows 7 (Windows Edition section)

Windows 7 edition: Windows 7 Professional (Windows Edition section)

System type: 64-bit OS (System | System type section)

To summarize this and to use the most technically correct format, we can say this PC is running: Windows 7 Professional (64-bit). As you can see, once you have the System Properties dialog open, it’s not too hard to identify this key information. But how do you open the System Property dialog box?

Use a keyboard combination

If you are feeling “geeky”, try this keyboard combination: Windows + Pause/Break, that is

Press and hold down the Windows key, and then

Press the Pause/Break key (usually located in the top-right corner of your keyboard)

This trick works for Windows 10, 8, and Windows 7 on most keyboards.

If this doesn’t work for you, don’t panic! There are other ways to access the System Property dialog box.

Windows 7

Click the Start button.

Click Control Panel from the list in the right margin.

In the Control Panel, select System and Security From the list of categories on the left pane.

From the Systems section on the right, select either the section title System or View amount of RAM and processor speed.

This opens the System Properties dialog box.

Windows 8

Method One – The Quick Link Menu

This method takes advantage of the Windows Quick Link menu.

Hold down the Windows key and press X at the same time to open the Quick Link menu as shown above.

Select System from the list of commands.

Method Two – Access the Control Panel

You can always access the System Properties dialog box from the Control Panel.

Click the Start button.

Click Control Panel from the right menu.

Select System from the list of items.

Windows 10

Method One – The Quick Link Menu

This method uses the Windows Quick Link menu which is almost identical to the one used in Windows 8.

Hold down the Windows key and press X at the same time to open the Quick Link menu as shown above.

Select System from the list of commands.

Method Two – Search for System Properties

Click the Start button.

Type the word “system“.

Windows 10 will display the System Properties tool under “Best match” as shown above.

Click System.

Did You Get It?

By now, you should be able to:

Master at least one method of opening the System Properties dialog box, and…

Know how to extract your Windows version, edition, and system type information.

We hope this blog helps you become more familiar with your PC. Should it require some kind of repair, refresh, or even reinstall, you know exactly what you will be dealing with.

Last but not the least, you can impress or even help your friends and family by applying what you’ve learned in times of need!

As stated in my recently updated book – “5 Tips for a Fast PC”, I am often the “go-to” guy for solving computer problems amongst my families and friends. One of our primary intentions in writing the book was to inform ordinary PC users how to master the basics of computer optimization and maintenance. I have to admit that I purposely left one specific trick out of the book – updating Windows device drivers – for a reason. This is because updating device drivers can be tricky if you don’t have the proper software tool. Although, we want to emphasize here that keeping your PC’s device drivers updated will enhance your PC’s stability and performance.

Today, I am going to explain what device drivers are, why you should update your PC’s device drivers, and how to do it safely and effectively.

What device drivers are

Your Windows PC is made of the following “building blocks”: the hardware, the Operating System (also known as Windows OS), and application software. But have you ever wondered how your OS and application software interact with hardware?

This is where a device driver comes into play. A device driver, commonly known as a driver, is a computer program that controls or drives a particular set of hardware. It serves as an interface between the OS and the hardware device. For instance, your mouse is controlled by a mouse device driver and your keyboard is controlled by a keyboard driver. And this pretty much applies to any hardware that’s in, or attached to, your PC. This includes the monitor, hard drive, CPU, web camera, printer, scanner, speaker, and more.

When should you update drivers

As we have pointed out, drivers are an essential component of the Windows OS as they ensure your PC runs smoothly. Similarly to the Windows OS and software programs, drivers can become outdated or even obsolete. There are three primary reasons that can cause your drivers to become outdated or even damaged.

Windows update: when you perform a major Windows update, like upgrading to Windows 10, some of your existing (“legacy”) hardware devices may not be properly detected by the new OS.

Hardware update: when you add new hardware, such as a mouse, keyboard, web cam, or printer, your Windows OS may not necessarily carry the latest driver for that specific piece of hardware.

Malware attack or invalid operations: when your PC has been attacked by malware or a third-party software that performs invalid operations, it can damage device drivers and cause issues beyond what is strictly security-related.

If your PC experiences one of the following symptoms commonly related to drivers, you definitely need to consider checking the status of your device drivers:

Your PC or software freezes or crashes frequently or even occasionally, but obviously enough to cause you concern.

Your hardware simply stops working or malfunctions. For instance, your speakers produce no sound or your printer doesn’t work.

Your PC or laptop generates unusual noise or heat, which can indicate issues originating with how hardware is being used.

You encounter general PC performance issues that can’t be addressed with the steps suggested in the “5 Tips for a Fast PC”.

Based on my experience, a majority of the mysterious PC performance or stability issues can be explained and addressed by performing a device driver check.

How to update device drivers

There are two ways to update devices drivers: manually and automatically.

You can manually update device drivers by accessing the Control Panel, opening the Device Manager, right-mouse click a specific hardware, and select Update Driver Software. You then have the option of letting Windows find the most updated driver for you, or installing the latest driver software that you download from the hardware manufacture’s website.

Although the manual process works in theory, it depends on two important factors. Number one, you know which hardware requires a driver update, and secondly, you trust Microsoft has the latest and best driver for you to download. Nevertheless, we found the second condition to be particularly unreliable for those who already perform Windows update on a regular basis. If Microsoft has the right device drivers for a piece of hardware you suspect is causing issues, then it stands to reason you would have automatically received a Windows update already.

Using device update software

Some advanced users are able to manually update drivers by searching the Internet for the correct version of drivers. However, we suggest using reliable driver update software to perform this task safely and effectively. The advantages of using a professional driver update program are:

It’s automated: a driver update application scans all hardware on your PC and identifies associated drivers that are updated or damaged.

It’s efficient: an effective and accredited driver application would take advantage of cloud-based resources and thereby have access to a comprehensive collection of device drivers for almost any hardware devices, for any PC brand.

It’s safe: a reputable device driver software would be digitally signed and approved by Microsoft to operate on your PC and thus be free from any security concern or threat.

Our test and recommendation

Building an effective driver update software program and maintaining a comprehensive driver database requires very specific knowledge and experience. We here at CompuClever evaluated three top driver software programs available on the market based on the criteria of coverage, effectiveness, and ease-of-use. These are the top three:

It can be tough to choose a new laptop. There is an endless variety of features to consider. Will the laptop you purchase end up being too basic, or too powerful for your needs and therefore too expensive? Here are some tips to help you choose the right one.

There’s never been a better time to buy a new computer. Prices are cheap and there is almost endless variety — almost too much variety. A dizzying combination of features can make it almost impossible to choose a new computer. Often we’ll buy a new desktop or laptop only to find it’s underpowered, has poor battery life, or is simply to big for our needs.

To help make things easy, we’ve created this short guide to buying a new laptop.

Why Choose a Laptop Over a Desktop?

This article is going to focus on choosing a new laptop. We think that for most casual users, laptops make a better choice than desktops when making a purchase. Laptops are lightweight and don’t take up much space. Also, since they don’t need peripherals such as a monitor, speakers or a computer desk, are generally cheaper than desktops.

Choosing Your “OS”: Mac or Microsoft?

The first choice what operating system, or “OS” will power your laptop. Currently Mac and Microsoft dominate the market for laptops. What’s the difference?

Macbooks: Expensive High-Performance Machines for Professionals

Macbooks, produced by just one company, Apple, have developed a reputation for quality, performance and for being easy to use. Macbooks can be used almost right out of the box, with no need to update drivers or security software.

The downside of Mac computers is that they are expensive — an entry-level Macbook sells for at least $1000. The truth is that Mac OS is really meant for professionals. Everyday users looking for a laptop to surf the internet, make Skype calls and send emails while staying on a budget likely do not need a high-performance machine like a Mac. It’s overkill.

Microsoft Windows 10: More Variety and Budget-Friendly

For years, Mac users looked down on Microsoft Windows users. Windows used to be considered complicated and prone to security vulnerabilities. But not anymore. With the release of Windows 10, Microsoft has finally created a beautiful OS that just works. What’s more, there is a wider variety of computers for every budget that run Windows 10. Only Apple makes the Mac, while dozens of companies produce a dizzying array of laptops that run on Windows.

The downside is that some Windows laptops are not always as shiny or high-powered as their Mac counterparts. But, once again, if all you need a computer for is to surf the internet, send emails and talk on Skype to relatives, is it really worth it to shell out a ton of money for a Mac?

Budget Laptops Vs. Ultrabooks: What’s the Difference?

If you have decided on Windows as your OS, the next challenge is sorting through the wide variety of laptops out there to find the one that’s right for you.

Budget Laptops: Affordability… For a Price

You’ll encounter “budget laptops” that just do the basics. The HP Stream Notebook is one such budget offering that retails for just under $300. While this may seem like an incredible deal, it’s important to take a look at the specs, first: the HP Stream is powered by a Celeron chip, which not only does not have the power of other more expensive CPU chips, but also is not nearly as efficient. This means lower battery life. The HP Stream also has a fairly small screen, not much onboard space for installing software programs, and just 2 GB of RAM, which makes a difference when it comes to performance.

Ultrabooks: More Performance, But More Costly

On the other end of the spectrum from budget laptops are “ultrabooks” such as the HP Probook, which retails for around $1300. These laptops feature a better design, longer battery life and superior performance that working professionals demand.

In many ways ultrabooks are mimicking their Mac cousins, except with a Windows OS. Once again, the question you have to ask is: do you really need all that power?

Most of us will choose a laptop somewhere between the low and the high end of the price and performance spectrum. The next question is, with so much variety, how do you choose a new laptop?

3 Rules for Choosing a New Laptop

It really comes down to just three rules with choosing a new laptop:

1) Look at RAM first

If you’re surfing the web and using Microsoft Word from time to time, RAM is generally what is going to determine the performance of your computer. Some sub-$250 laptops come with only 2GB of RAM, but ideally you want at least 4GB on even a budget system and 8GB if you can spend just a little more. For most users, 16GB or more is overkill.

2) Use the CPU to gauge battery life

While the CPU is the engine under the hood of your computer, it affects battery life as well as overall performance. A cheaper processor will use more power, which will drain battery life more quickly. What’s more, cheaper processors generate more heat, which in turn results in annoying fan noise.

The problem with CPU’s is that there is an almost endless variety to choose from. Here are the CPU’s you should be looking for in a new laptop:

AMD E Series or Intel Pentium/Celeron

These are basic processors that are typically found on budget laptops such as the HP Probook we mentioned above. These chips provide enough power for web surfing and watching YouTube, but that’s about it.

AMD A series or Intel Core i3 / i5

If you’re looking for a mainstream laptop with the best combination of price and performance, get a Core i5. Core i3 is a small step down — it’s not quite as energy-efficient, which means less battery time. AMD A series CPUs are less common, but promise similar performance.

What about the Intel Core i7?

The i7 chip is probably overkill for most of us. It’s an ultra-powerful CPU that powers video editing workstations and gaming computers. All of that performance comes at a significant price.

3) Pay attention to screen size

Once again, there is an endless variety of screen sizes to choose from. Here are a couple of tips:

13 to 14 inches: Provides the best balance of portability and usability, particularly if you get a laptop that weighs under 4 pounds.

15 inches: The most popular size, 15-inch laptops usually are uncomfortable to lug around for very long. Consider this size if you want a larger screen and you’re not planning to take your laptop on frequent trips.

Other Things to Look for When Buying a Laptop

Besides these 3 basic rules for choosing a laptop, there is seemingly a multitude of other decisions to make:

HDD vs. SSD

Compared to the traditional spinning HDD hard disk, a solid-state drive (SSD) is a popular choice for laptop users: SSD’s are lighter, increase performance and improve battery time. On top of that there is no annoying fan noise with an SSD. However, SSD’s are significantly more expensive than an HDD.

Touchscreen or No Touchscreen

Many laptops now come equipped with a touchscreen. This may seem like a cool, new way to use a computer, but, once again, ask yourself if you really need a touchscreen on a laptop. In reality, touchscreens work best with tablets and with convertible “2-in-1” laptops. With laptops, it’s easier just to use a mouse to click around the screen.

Dedicated Graphics Card

If you’re planning to use your laptop to play video games, you’re going to need a dedicated graphics card, or GPU. Budget laptops with a dedicated GPU are very difficult to find, so plan on spending more if this is something you need.

Build Quality

Budget laptops will typically have a no-frills “build quality” with poor design and plastic-like feel. However, some manufacturers do offer budget laptops that look and feel great. Besides looking good, laptops with a good build quality tend to be more durable and last longer.

Questions?

So, while it may seem almost impossible to figure out what kind of laptop to buy, there are really three rules you can use to help narrow down your choices. And, once again, when setting out to buy a new laptop it’s important to remember what you’re planning to use it for, and then make sure you’re not buying something either too powerful or, worse yet, not powerful enough to make you happy.

Microsoft is no longer offering Windows 10 as a free upgrade as of July 29th, 2016. If you have already upgraded to Windows 10 or have recently bought a computer device with the latest operating system from Microsoft, you need to know that the new operating system is missing some pretty important features. Here are four tips for improving the default Windows 10 installation.

Keep in mind that you can still upgrade to Windows 10 but you will have to pay the full cost.

Why upgrade?

Windows 10 is a dramatic improvement over Windows 8. The new OS not only looks nice, the desktop software is intended to seamlessly integrate with tablet apps. CNN’s review of Windows 10 provides a quick snapshot of what’s new in Windows 10. As well, with the upcoming consumer release of the first service pack for the operating system it may be a good time to reconsider upgrading. On top of that, Microsoft will eventually stop issuing security patches for Windows 7 and 8, so you’re going to want to upgrade someday anyway.

If your PC is not powerful enough for Windows 10, don’t upgrade. However for everyone else now is the time to upgrade to Windows 10. As well, many people are starting to consider purchasing a system pre-installed with Windows 10.

So, for upgraders and new purchasers alike, there are some things we have learned about the default Windows 10 installation settings that need to be addressed to keep your system and data as safe as possible.

Tip 1: What to Do When Windows 10 Upgrade Process Fails

While purchasers of a computer that comes installed with Windows 10 will never have to worry about this, sometime there is an error during the actual process of upgrading to Windows 10 and everything grinds to a halt. Happily, PC TuneUp Maestro does have a tool for addressing a number of Windows Update errors and should be the first thing to try if you have the program installed.

To use PC TuneUp Maestro’s Windows Update Tool to recover from this problem simply:

Open PC TuneUp Maestro on your computer

Click “Fix & Clean”

Click “Windows Update Tool”

Run the tool and see if that fixes the issue. Should the issue persist:

Go to the “About” panel (from the main menu of the program)

Click “Get product support”

Click “Send error report”

We can then look at the issues to see what can be done to resolve the issue.

Another approach is to use the installer service from Microsoft and, just to be safe, bypass the automatic update process entirely. You can download the Microsoft Update Installer here.

Tip 2: How to Create a Recovery Disk

Your new system most likely comes with Windows 10 preinstalled, which means you don’t have to worry at all about upgrading from Windows 7 or Windows 8. However, what you might not realize is that Windows 10 does not come with CD’s to reinstall the OS if your hard drive crashes.

To be on the safe side, you will need to create restore disks.

To do this, you’ll need:

USB thumbdrive with 4 GB of space or more

Your computer running Windows 10

How to create a recovery disk:

In Windows 10, click Start and type: create recovery

Hit “Enter” on your keyboard

Open “Recovery”

Click “Create Recovery drive”

Make sure your thumbdrive is connected

Click “Next”

Wait while the wizard prepares to copy files to your thumbdrive

Again, make sure your thumbdrive is at 4 GB, click “Next”

Creating the recovery drive can take some time—you can do something else while it is prepared.

When complete, click “Finish”

When you need to use the recovery drive, simply connect it to your computer and boot from it. For more help, use this Microsoft link and follow the directions.

Tip 3: How to Enable “System Restore” on Windows 10

In Windows 10, for some reason the System Restore function is disabled in the final set up of the install — this is as baffling as the Safe Mode being removed! We recommend re-enabling System Restore. It’s a quick fix that can be done in just a couple of minutes.

To enable System Restore:

Click in the “Search Windows” area of the Task Bar

Type in “Create a restore point”

In the panel that appears, click the circle beside “Turn on system protection”

For system protection, 5-10 GB should be ample space

Click “OK”

You will now have a System Restore disk installed on your USB. This makes recovering from a serious crash quick and simple to do.

Tip 4: How to Play Videos on Windows 10

This may seem absolutely crazy, but Windows 10 does not come with a video player. Microsoft does offer a video player on their version of the app store, but what’s even nuttier is they want US$14.99 for it!

There are a couple of free solutions:

If you already have PC TuneUp Maestro we recommend using Ultra File Opener to play videos—you can download Ultra File Opener and get a free license number for it by installing the program and opening it.

If you do not have PC TuneUp Maestro the a program like the VLC Media player is free and also an excellent way to play videos and even Blu-rays.

In Conclusion

Windows 10 is a powerful new operating system, and it’s here to stay. While you may decide not to upgrade and stay with Windows 7 or Windows 8, if you do buy a new computer you are now prepared to get the most out of it.

What can compare to the feeling of getting a new PC? It’s like watching Tom Hanks in the movie “Big” when he spends a day in the toy department! While reasons for purchasing a new computer will differ from person to person, what remains constant is a level of excitement and anticipation that comes with getting it set up and putting it to use. With any level of excitement comes taking a few moments to take care of certain little necessities before rushing headlong into the fun. Ahhh adulthood!

Stages

We have come up with a list of items that we feel constitute the “necessities” of first running you brand new PC. In an attempt to make it easier for you we have broken these items into stages – that way it doesn’t seem overwhelming and tedious. We have also included an approximate time of completion. These may vary based on many factors but it is intended to give you an idea of what to expect. By having this information available you can determine how many items you can take on based on your schedule. If you want to bite the bullet and complete the tasks on the same day… go for it!

Let’s get started.

Stage1

Warranty and Registration Cards (Time to Complete: Approximately 5 minutes)
Fill warranty and registration cards in right away. Required information such as serial numbers can usually be found on the back of printers and computers. So before you connect the cables and set the device into its location, get the information written down while it is still easy to read. Once the system is up and running, you can then send in the cards to be registered. While most retailers will act on your behalf for warranty concerns if the store closes its doors, the computer maker will require that you provide proof that it is their device and it was purchased within the warranty period. Save yourself the frustration and do this early.

Precaution: In some cases warranty and registry cards can ask for too much information. As a rule, “…a sales receipt should suffice if you need to file a warranty claim”[1]. We’ll let you be the judge of whether too much is being asked of you in terms of potential harvesting of personal data to marketers and whether you keep your receipts secure, safe, and available if you need to make a warranty claim.

Restore Disks (Time to Complete: No more than 10 minutes)
Your new system most likely comes with Windows 10 preinstalled. That’s great – that saves some work! You need to realize though this likely means you do not have CD’s to reinstall Windows if the need arises. So, to be on the safe side, you will need to create restore disks. Use this Microsoft link and follow the directions.

Windows Live Account (Time to Complete: 2 – 3 minutes)
When you first start your computer, Windows will ask you to either sign on to your Windows Live email account or to create an account with Microsoft. This is not necessary but it does add some functions to using Windows across multiple units such as those between your desktop, laptop, tablet, or Windows phone. If you do not have any of these other items, ignore the offer to create an account. If you have logon credentials with MSN or Outlook.com then that login is your Windows account. For more information follow this Microsoft FAQ link.

Set the System Restore (Time to Complete: 2 – 3 minutes)
System Restore, by default, is not enabled. You need to set this up to keep the system as safe as possible. Information on how to enable the system restore can be found by following this Microsoft link.

Backup Admin Account (Time to Complete: 5 – 10 minutes)
Create a Backup Admin account. Many problems can arise should you have one admin account and it gets damaged. If you create a backup admin account you can simply work around the issue rather than working through hours of trying to undo whatever created the issue. Save yourself the time and unpleasantness by setting up a second one right away.

Note: The big time saver when doing something like this is reading through the instructions first – even if you feel they were written in a foreign language or in complete tech talk. It does help to have some idea of what commands are used. This should take 5 -10 minutes going at an easy pace.

You can use this helpful site with easy to use instructions.

Stage 2

Beware Freeware (Time to Complete: Up to 30 minutes)
Check the “All Programs” list in PC Clean Maestro. Open the program, click the Uninstaller tab and review the items in the list provided. Many new systems include a list of freeware and trialware programs.

If you have already purchased an antivirus program and are going to install it, do not leave a free antivirus on the system as you could experience interference and compatibility issues. Stay with the programs you know and save yourself the frustration of programs popping up on the screen.

Note: The time to complete will vary from retailer to retailer, but give yourself lots of time to do this as you do not want to rush. Give yourself 30 minutes to look through the list, research the programs and make a decision about if you really want the program or not.

If you are in need of an AV app… this would be a good opportunity to install and run CompuClever AntiVirus PLUS on your system. It’s designed to deliver the best performance for your PC and it’s built on the most advanced antivirus technology available today.

Remove Remnants (Time to Complete: Up to 3 minutes)
After installing your programs remember to clear up the install remnants so the drive is clear of unwanted files. Open PC Clean Maestro and from the “Clean” page, confirm that the items you want to scan and clean are checked. Next, click the Start button. The scan will be quick and you can easily review items before removing them. It will take more time to review the findings then to scan or clean them.

Registry Scan and Fix (Time to Complete: Up to 3 minutes)
Now that you have removed unnecessary and unwanted files, it’s time to clear the registry as there may be remnants that have not been removed. To scan and clean your registry open PC TuneUp Maestro and click the “Optimize PC” page in the left panel. Click the Registry Defrag option and perform the Express Scan.

Note: If you want to do a Deep Scan be prepared to have the scan take longer. Using a new PC with decent speed, we have experienced even the Deep scan to take less than a minute.
When the scan is complete, review the results and click the Defrag button.

HD Defrag (Time to Complete: Up to 30 minutes)
After removing items from your computer it’s time to address sorting – defragmenting – the hard drive for best performance.

Important: Before we begin, you need to make sure that your hard drive is NOT a Solid State Drive (SSD). You do not need to defrag a SSD due to the fact they use a different storage technology. Check your product information and if you PC is using a SSD, move on to the next task which can be found in Stage 3.

If your new PC uses the traditional spinning platter hard drive (HDD), we recommend using good PC habits right from the start and defragmenting it. Good practice is to defrag your HD when you remove items of significant size (applications, media files, etc.). To defrag your drive, Open PC TuneUp Maestro and click the “Optimize PC” page in the left panel. Click the Disk Defrag option at the top of the list and follow the instructions.

Stage 3

Power Bar (Time to Complete: Varies)
Is the light on the power bar flashing or flickering? If so… replace it. This is the least expensive insurance policy you can buy for your new computer. That flashing or flickering light means it needs to be replaced.

Note: The time to complete this depends greatly on when you can get to a store and purchase a new power bar.

Windows Updates (Time to Complete: 10 – 30 minutes)
Check for updates from Windows. Windows 10 supplies driver updates for all your devices (video cards, printers, etc.), so it is possible that when Windows was installed the devices were not connected. To be certain everything has the correct drivers you need to run an update: use this Microsoft site for details. Please note Windows 10 could start performing updates before you choose to do so. If it does let the process complete itself as trying to stop it could lead to Windows having problems before you get to use your computer.

Note: Time to complete depends on the amount of updates needed. This depends on how long ago the retailer created the image for installing Windows 10, the speed of your Internet connection, and the speed of your CPU.

Conclusions:

Now that you have completed the steps – there is no reason why your PC shouldn’t be performing at top speeds. You should notice fast startup times as well as exceptional file access and program startup performance. We hope this article has helped you to feel less intimidated with your new and somewhat unfamiliar PC acquisition. Taking the right steps right from the get go is critical and we think these tips will support you well in that regard.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is a book we hold in high regard at CompuClever. We would even go as far as to say that every technical support person should read it. Not only is it a work of philosophical non-fiction, Robert Pirsig wrote it over a four year period while he was working as a technical writer creating computer manuals.

Pirsig describes the book by what it is not: “it should in no way be associated with that great body of factual information relating to orthodox Zen Buddhist practice. It’s not very factual on motorcycles, either.” It can be considered an investigation of quality; the metaphysics of quality. The main character strives to find the answer to what is considered good or “quality”.

We start from this point as we are seeking how to best determine the quality of our PC. One valuable way to identify PC health is to examine and take full advantage of error messages. They are technically specific and often incomprehensible to the person using the computer, which makes them rather maddening to appear on your screen. In many cases people will report a problem and make some mention of an error message, but in most cases, use vague terms.

What To Do

While the frustration being encountered is understandable (we too have encountered issues on our systems and had to contact support to get it resolved), there are things that you can do to help yourself get the issue resolved faster. First we suggest that you keep a pen and paper at your computer so that if an error message appears you can follow the steps we have laid out here:

1) Write it down. Error codes will not normally tell the user what the issue is but, they should tell the company making the program what the error is and will typically provide specific information. We of course are presuming the message comes from their application. If the message is not from their program it can be used to research the issue and to find a solution.

You can also gather a “screenshot” of the desktop and send it attached to your email asking for help. See the section on Screenshots below for more information.

2) Describe steps leading to the error. Take note of what was being done on the computer before the error appeared. By doing so you can then see if performing the steps always results in an error or not. If it does, this information will help the technician zero in on what the cause of the issue is faster.

3) Contact tech support. If what you are trying to do is something that is very important you can tell the technician when you contact the technical support team. If the error cannot be immediately resolved a good technician should be able to advise you as to how to get the task completed to lessen the pressure you are under.

4) Don’t Delay. Report the issue right away rather than spend hours in frustration. You need to let the support team know and, keep in mind, perhaps the issue is one they have resolved for others and they can get you going much faster than if you attempt it alone. You can try to resolve the issue on your own but the sooner you ask for help the sooner you will find a solution.

Screenshots

Taking a screenshot will save you on writing things down. For a new user this may feel like more than what you want to take on. There are ways to make this easier on yourself.

For people with digital cameras or cell phones, taking a picture of the screen and sending the image is an easy way to include detailed error information. Do not make the picture too small – pictures of computer displays are usually quite poor due to the camera shutter speed being faster than the refreshing of the screen. Smaller images can be very hard to read and resizing them to make them larger results in a fuzzy image.

If you do not have a device that can take a picture there are other ways to gather this information. Taking a screenshot using onboard Windows functionality varies depending on what operating system you are running. We suggest doing a search online. One good source is www.wikihow.com. You can refer to this article: http://www.wikihow.com/Take-a-Screenshot-in-Microsoft-Windows.

There is also a free application called “Jing” which you can use to take a screenshot and save it to the internet. Then you can simply send the link of the image as part of the help request.

Jing: To get the program click here: https://www.techsmith.com/jing.html.
Next, click on “Free Download” and then click on “Windows Download”.

The website will lead you through the download and install process. Once the install completes the program opens and actually takes you through the process of gathering a screenshot, saving it to the internet, and then gathering the link to send to the person so they can have access to the image.

We have covered the basics of PC errors and how to take the required information that will solve your issue and get you up and running again. Keep in mind that if an application is causing errors to occur you can contact the manufacturers and get solid support. We feel this is the mark of QUALITY software and QUALITY service.

In our latest series of articles we have examined Internet slowdown. We’ve introduced very good information about the various causes of slow connectivity and the PC conditions we face. Maybe you know firsthand or secondhand what it is like to be overtaken by something on your PC that cripples the overall functionality. In extreme cases it means a trip to a PC repair shop and having the computer wiped and re-installed. It’s very similar to the effects of a computer virus with only one exception – you may have installed it yourself rather than being attacked. This condition is happening frequently among beginner PC users and it is this group of PC users that are being targeted. We’re going to help you restore the previous condition of your web browser and provide some recommendations on how to prevent similar occurrences.

Add-ons

Picking up software add-ons means modifications get made to your web browser such as extra toolbars and popup windows. Many of these items simply want to stake their territory maybe for the purpose of directing you to certain websites so you can make some purchase.

More: To get a better idea of what these items look like and what they do, see our article called: Foistware – Messing Up Your PC Experience. The word “foist” means to force something that is not wanted on someone.

Bog Down

It is the web browser specifically that gets bogged down in these situations as it contains too many unnecessary add-ons. You will find that it isn’t as responsive as it should be as it gets pulled in different directions. Being sabotaged takes a toll. Plug-ins, BHOs, add-ons, additional toolbars, if unnecessary, all compete with networking and computing resources. The result is that your ability to browse slows down and is… hijacked.

Installation

An important reminder from our last article – these items land on our PC without our knowledge but are a result of unsafe browsing practices including opening email attachments or passing files from one PC to your own via chat rooms, peer-to-peer file sharing, or instant messaging. It may be hard to believe, but many unwanted items wind up on our PC because you installed them unknowingly. Some are from legitimate software vendors that bundle their installation with other software. You need to examine the install steps and clear any check boxes that include extra programs.

Typically when installing software you will see some screens that have checkboxes with items like:

[✓] Make Ask.com my default search.

[✓] Add Yahoo! Toolbar to your browser.

[✓] Yes, I want Bing toolbar for Internet Explorer.

[✓] Also install, free McAfee security scan.

You need to know that you CAN clear these check boxes. In this way, ONLY the software you intended to have in the first place will still be installed.

Action Items:

We are going to point you to our last article – Bogged Down – for steps on how to uninstall unwanted items. The first step is removal of the items. Next, we are going to cover how to restore your browser to its previous condition.

To restore the browser

In the PC Clean Maestro window, select the Browsers button in the left pane as can be seen in the image below.

Select the browser tab (for example: “IE” or “Firefox”).

Click the restore button located at the top right.

Good Practices:

Let’s cover just a few examples of good PC practice to keep your PC from suffering the ill effects of add-ons and foistware.

Be Vigilant

When installing anything to your computer – examine what it is that you are getting. This includes emails from trusted sources (their email may have been hijacked), and it includes reading all the information for each step of a software install.

Check online to see if the attachment, software, or the web site (URL) is legitimate or a known source of PC problems.

Bonus Tip: refer to ShouldIRemoveIt.com to check the validity of a software.

If you are having something installed that you do not want – STOP the install.

If you are being attacked, save any and all data that you can and power down your PC. If you do not have control of your PC you can press and hold the keys Ctrl – Alt – Delete.

Don’t

Don’t trust a download purely based on what you have heard or know of it – it could be faked and it can include add-ons.

Don’t install additional browser toolbars unless you are certain it is for your daily PC use. Too many toolbars can bog down your web browser and you may find you don’t use all the functionality.

Anti-virus Programs

We recommend using an anti-virus program that allows you to be in control. This includes not being bothered or nagged by popup messages and complications. It should run in the background and protect you. To that end, there are programs that are free and offer basic coverage.

In Summary

We know of PC users that get into trouble with their computer repeatedly. It usually means having to take it to a PC repair technician and having the computer wiped and re-installed. We hope that this article will serve you in taking action when you run into trouble and will help you in preventing it from happening at all.

We will continue to provide story lines like this that benefit all of us and we will describe them in a manner that is within reach of everyday computer users. If you have some ideas of topics you would like us to cover, email us at: newsletter@compuclever.com
