This kind of reminder is worth stating.\u00a0 There are times we look in a place twice to find a misplaced object.\u00a0 The reason \u2013 we searched the first time in a frantic state. \u00a0Solutions come when we can take a deep breath and come at the problem with a different perspective.<\/p>\n

In the end, resolving most computer issues including no sound, is simple, you check or test one potential cause and see if it fixes the problem.\u00a0 If it doesn\u2019t\u2026 move on to the next item.<\/p>\n

  1. Check the mute and volume levels.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Important<\/strong>:\u00a0 There are two volume controls: one for the operating system and found in the taskbar and one for the application you are using.<\/p>\n

    What To Do:<\/p>\n

    A crossed out speaker volume icon or an \u201cx\u201d next to the speaker icon in the taskbar is an indication that volume is muted or the volume level is set to the lowest setting (the mute level).<\/p>\n

    Adjust these and check if the sound is working now.<\/p>\n

    You can also check to see if the sound is working using another application or media track (YouTube or music file).<\/p>\n

    Check Hardware<\/h2>\n

    If you have headphones, earplugs or speakers\u2026 then we need to look at potential hardware issues.<\/p>\n

    For any of us that have had some Microsoft network administration training\u2026 the heavily emphasized piece of advice stated again and again is: check the wires and connections!<\/p>\n

    1. Check the cables from the speakers to the computer. Check the cable or USB connection if that is what you are using.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Here\u2019s a Tip<\/strong>:\u00a0 Check that you haven\u2019t put a cable into the wrong socket!\u00a0 This occurs more frequently than you would expect.<\/p>\n

      What To Do:<\/p>\n

      Sometimes the issue is fixed by taking out the cable and re-inserting it.\u00a0 You also may need to check if the speakers (assuming you are using speakers) have power to them.\u00a0 You can check the power cables to make sure they are properly connected and the power is on to your speakers.<\/p>\n

      Check Windows OS & Software to Fix No Sound Issues<\/h2>\n

      With some of the more obvious fixes behind us it\u2019s now time to go down the rabbit hole.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to examine the items that are controlled by the Windows operating system and software.<\/p>\n

      Most all PC users don\u2019t realize that there are many volume controls easily accessed right from the toolbar \u2013 right from the Volume button in the taskbar!<\/p>\n

      \u00a0Volume Mixer<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

      1. Check the Volume Mixer to check the volume and sound of all items you are currently running.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Here\u2019s How:<\/p>\n

        Right click on the Volume icon in the taskbar and select: \u201cOpen Volume Mixer\u201d.\u00a0 You will see the following window appear:<\/p>\n

        As you can see, each sound source has its own volume control that you can adjust and mute.\u00a0 Adjust these to make sure the volume is working for any and all of the items.<\/p>\n

        1. Check to see that the right device is selected.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Right click on the Volume icon in the taskbar and select: \u201cPlayback devices\u201d.\u00a0 You will see a window like this one displayed:<\/p>\n

          The green check mark signifies which sound device is the default.\u00a0 Right-click on any item in the list to get the menu of options.\u00a0 For example, you can right-click \u201cSpeakers\u201d and choose to configure the device or test it.[\/nextpage][nextpage title=”Windows Settings”]Windows Settings<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

            Now you can make certain the speakers are being detect by Windows and the Device Driver is working properly.\u00a0 To do this you need to:<\/p>\n
